Description
This illustration is a tribute to Antoine-François Callet’s portrait of Louis XVI. Here’s a fun fact about this “sympathetic” King Louis: did you know that he helped design the guillotine? Indeed, when the plans for this adorable machine were presented to him, they first showed a crescent-shaped cleaver. A keen tinkerer (Louis XVI was especially gifted in locksmithing, his great hobby), the king then put in his two cents and suggested an oblique cleaver, believing it to be more effective. He was able to see for himself. What a perfectionist Louis was!
