Updating the Momir Basic Cube with Brothers’ War

Brothers’ War is an awesome set for complementing any Momir Basic cube. There’s a plethora of big creatures to be added to your roster, which is great since most cubes will be struggling (like mine) to fill out the 9mv and 10mv spots! Below you will find a review of the best cards to add to these slots and why I think they should be in every Momir Cube. At the end of this article I will post an updated list of cards and some tweaks I made to my personal Momir Vanguard guard. So, without further ado, let’s get this show rolling!

As my cube goes only to mv10, I will be skipping the totally awesome Metalwork Colossus with its massive mv11. However I am contemplating adding 2 slots to my cube, an MV0 and an MV11, so maybe in a future update we will see him again.

A note on color identities! I have divided each MV slot into stacks of 10 of each color. However I am taking liberties with this, sometimes a color slot will just not be filled enough and I will add a colored artifact to fill out that slot. Sometimes a color slot is filled up, but a colored artifact creature just is too awesome to be left out and I will put it in the artifact slot.

1. Rust Goliath

What’s not to like about a 10/10 Reach, Trampler? The Prototype ability does not add much to the cube, but just these stats alone make it a very worthy addition to the MV10 Artifact Creatures slot

2. Woodcaller Automaton

While not as big and bad as the Rust Goliath, and having an ability that actually does absolutely nothing because the cards are actually just put into play and not cast (bummer!) I’ve been pondering the inclusion of this guy into the cube. At last I did choose to include him, just because there’s not really much options in the MV10 field, and beggers just cannot afford to be choosers.

It’s still an 8/8 body on the table..

3. Blast-Furnace Hellkite

A Brothers War commander card and one of the few non-artifact creatures, a welcome inclusion to the cube at MV9. The artifact offering is pretty useless, but this hellkite makes up for that with its other abilities. Flying and Double strike are pretty good on a 5/5 creature, the fact that it also grants Double Strike to all your other creatures can really make this a game-winner. Let’s hope the RNG-Gods are in your favor when putting down those MV9 cards

4. Depth Charge Colossus

Another cool big bad artifact creature to add to the MV9 spot is the Depth Charge Colossus, with its 9/9 body it sure packs a punch. It does not untap during your upkeep, but you can at any time pay 3 to untap it. This lets you attack during your own turn and when needed it can be used to surprise-block your opponent’s attack. Awesome!

5. Hulking Metamorph

Actually one of my favorites here. I love being able to copy other stuff on the battlefield, and I think in this cube it can be quite a powerful ability. Too bad it’s limited to copying your own stuff only, but with the right boardstate that should not be too big a drawback I can only imagine. Even on a bad day, it will still be a 7/7!

This one, despite being blue, is added to the MV9 artifact/colorless slot

6. Cityscape Leveler

This one will be taking the place of the Vexing Scuttler in the cube. Vexing Scuttler, at MV8, is a small body and has an ability that just is not worth it. At MV8 you want big splashy creatures that can alter the boardstate and I belive Cityscape Leveler can be game-altering with its ability to destroy nonland-permanents on attack. Also the added option of giving yourself or your opponent some ramp can make for some interesting decisions during gameplay.

7. Fallaji Dragon Engine

This will be replacing the Gate Colossus from the artifact slot, and be put into the red slot since red only has 9 cards in the MV8 stack.

The Fallaji Dragon Engine with its 5/5 body and ability to pump itself is not too shabby, especially since it also flies.

8. Angel of the Ruins

Angel of the ruins, with its awesome ability to exile 2 troublemakers on your opponent’s side of the table will be replacing the not-so-awesome Yoked Plowbeast in the MV7 white card slot. The Yoked Plowbeast with its 5/5 and cycling ability just isn’t a really exciting card to put into play with Momir. A 5/7 flyer on its own is already an upgrade to the Plowbeast, add to that the exile etb effect and we have a clear winner here!

The updated list

Here’s a full list of the complete Momir Basic cube as it is now.

Changes to Momir

At this moment my custom Momir’s second (static) ability reads:

“X in the casting cost of a creature is equal to the mana spent on Momir’s ability divided by the number of X-es in the casting cost minus its MV”

I’m thinking about changing it to

“X in the casting cost of a creature is equal to the mana spent on Momir’s activated ability minus 1, divided by the number of X-es in the casting cost (rounded down)”

I think this change will work better for calculating the value of X. Also adding the Rounded Down clause will make it easier to calculate uneven casting costs. Ofcourse this means I will need to get new Momirs printed.
