KeyForge’s new Alliance format – I love it!

As primarily a CCG or Deckbuilder player I couldn’t be happier with the new Alliance format which actually allows me some form of deckbuilding and freedom of choice in what to play. I’m convinced it will be a popular format once Ghost Galacy irons out some of the kinks and gets the details worked out.

For those not familiar with this new way of playing, here’s a breakdown of the rules:

I do not understand why so many people are opposed to this idea. There’s been plenty of threads in many Facebook pages by people explaining exactly why this is bad for the game and how it will hurt the competitive scene.

Honestly, I think Alliance might actually be the savior of the competitive format. As it is now, people are throwing hundreds and hundreds of dollars into the game to open up decks trying to find the holy grail of card and house combinations that will give them the upperhand in tournaments. This makes the game inherently pay-to-win.

If Ghost Galaxy gets this right it will even the playing field for people with a modest collection getting to build a competitive level deck. Which will eventually attract more people into the game. And from recent updates I’m gathering they are doing their utter best to get it right, for example this addition:

Alliance is set locked (all pods must be from the same set) and will utilize a restricted list to mitigate degeneracy.
The restricted list does not apply to a natural deck (i.e. one that came out of a pack all as one deck).
The restricted mechanic has two components. No Alliance deck can include 2 or more different restricted cards.
Every restricted card will have a max copies limit. No Alliance deck can exceed the limit for it’s restricted card.
