Arkham Horror Files – What will FFG be announcing?

update 04-06-2021: Well, now we know what FFG is announcing; plus we have a leak for the revised core set. Check out our article detailing both the new Arkham Horror LCG Expansion and the Revised Core

So, with this tweet FFG teases us for upcoming announcements in June regarding Arkham Horror. What could these announcements be? Noone knows for sure, but a lot of rumors about products have been going around and here we are listing them 🙂

First off the announcements can be anything from new Mansions of Madness content to Arkham Horror LCG to completely new games. Note: The post carries both the #cardgames as the #boardgames tags!

A lof of enfranchised players fear that FFG will be announcing a new edition of the LCG, invalidating all the previous content  Asmodee has released in the past years. I personally doubt they will be releasing an incompatible new edition, but expect it more to be an updated core set. The new core set release is set for September 2021.

A rumor has been going for a while that FFG is working on a new game set in the Arkham universe, based on the ruleset of the Battlestar Galactica boardgame. The rumor is based on this leaked memo about alpha testing starting soon for a game called Arkham Horror: Atlantica

Here’s a transcription of the text from the screenshot:

“Soon we’ll be ready to begin our Alpha test for Arkham Horror: Atlantica – a brand new game set in the Arkham universe that will re-implement the mechanics of Battlestar Galactica: The board game – so I’m checking in! external image
The events of AH: Atlantica occur 10-20 years prior to those of our other games in the setting. Players take on the roles of crew and passengers aboard the passenger liner Atlantica as it travels from Europe to the New England coast. Mid-voyage, a passenger is found dead under mysterious circumstances next to an open tome covered in arcane symbols. Soon after, massive figures are spotted following the ship from a distance, and a flood of voracious creatures – half fish, half human – begin clawing their way up the hull. As the ensuing crises intensify, it quickly becomes clear that someone on board is hiding something. It may just be exhaustion playing tricks on the mind, but even once-trusted individuals are starting to look a bit… fishy.

AH: Atlantica introduces a brand new cast of characters to the Arkham universe, and does an excellent job at capturing the tension, mistrust and paranoia of the game that inspired it. The designer, Tony Fanchi, has put in tremendous effort to maintain the feel of BSG while updating and adapting rules to better fit the new theme. The core elements are there and recognizable – skill cards, skill checks, loyalty cards, titles, a sleeper phase, etc. – but plenty of innovative steps have taken place to ensure that it’s also an experience that stands on its own.

Testing may prove challenging, however, as the game plays 3-6 and will require a minimum of 3 people to be present at each testing session. With social distancing measures in place and coronavirus running rampant … [cuts off here]”

The Battlestar Galactica boardgame has always been highly regarded as one of the best in its genre, and is highly sought after since it went out of print. It seems logical that FFG would like to tap into that popularity and a retheme for one of their most popular franchises seems logical.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d announce this game in June!
